A Doula cares in 3 important stages
Prenatal
During pregnancy before labor, typically in third trimester.
Labor
Whether it is in a hospital or at home, my job as a doula is to surround you and your close family with support during labor.
Postpartum
After the baby is born and into the first few weeks after delivery.
An Essential Doula Package includes prenatal, labor, and postpartum support. See my packages to learn more about what is included.

Prenatal Visits
A prenatal visit (2hrs) is a in person meeting between you (and your spouse/partner, if you have one) and your doula before your baby is born. It’s where we get to know each other, talk through your birth hopes and questions, and prepare you emotionally, mentally, and practically for the big day.
It’s not medical—it’s about emotional support, birth education, and creating a calm, confident mindset before labor begins.
-
Birth Planning Support: Going over your preferences, options, and creating a flexible birth plan
Comfort Measures: Practicing breathing techniques, positions, massage, and relaxation tools
Partner Prep: Showing your partner how to support you during labor
Discussing Fears & Expectations: Talking through anxieties or past experiences in a safe, non-judgmental space
When to Call & What to Expect: Going over signs of labor and how to communicate with your doula
Postpartum Prep: Gentle conversations around postpartum healing, feeding, and newborn care
Q&A Time: No question is too small—we go through anything on your mind
-
Prenatal visits aren’t just about prepping for labor—they’re about being seen, heard, and held in one of life’s most powerful seasons. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, these visits lay the foundation for a calm, supported birth experience.
-
You’ve never done this before—so having someone explain, reassure, and walk you through each step makes a huge difference
Helps replace fear with confidence and knowledge
Gives you a voice—so your birth preferences feel heard and respected
Builds a trusting relationship with your doula, so you feel fully supported
-
Every pregnancy and birth is different—even if it’s not your first, your needs may be
Time to process a past birth experience (especially if it was difficult)
You may want a new type of support this time (natural birth, VBAC, different setting, etc.)
Helps refresh your tools, especially if it’s been a while
Gives you space to prepare emotionally and mentally while juggling family life
Doula support during labor means having a calm, knowledgeable, and comforting presence by your side from early labor until after your baby is born. Your doula is there to help you feel safe, supported, and in control, offering both physical comfort and emotional grounding throughout the entire birth experience.
They’re your guide, advocate, and steady hand, no matter how your birth unfolds.
The Big Day - Labor
-
While each birth is different, here’s what doula support typically includes:
Continuous Presence: Your doula stays with you from active labor until after baby arrives—no shift changes, no disappearing
Physical Support: Comfort measures like massage, counter-pressure, position changes, and breathwork
Emotional Support: Reassurance, encouragement, and calm energy through every stage
Advocacy: Helping you understand your options and communicate your wishes to your care team
Support for Your Partner: Guiding your partner so they feel confident and involved, or stepping in when they need a break
Creating a Soothing Environment: Dim lights, calming music, aromatherapy, and other small touches that make a big difference
Flexibility: Whether it’s at home, birth center, or hospital—your doula adapts to whatever the moment calls for
-
Having a doula at your birth means having someone who’s 100% focused on you—your comfort, your choices, your experience. Birth is powerful and unpredictable, but you don’t have to go through it alone.
A doula is your anchor, your teammate, and your biggest cheerleader—helping you feel strong, informed, and truly supported as you bring your baby into the world.
-
Everything is brand new—having someone calm and experienced can ease fears
You may not know what to expect—your doula helps guide you through every moment
Helps you feel more confident in your decisions and more in control of your experience
Partners often feel more at ease too, knowing someone is there to help both of you
-
Every labor is different—just because you’ve done it before doesn’t mean this time will be the same
Maybe you want a different kind of birth this time (e.g., natural, VBAC, less medicalized)
You might want more support than you had before, or to do things more intentionally
Doulas support your whole experience, not just the physical process
A postpartum visit (2-3 hrs) is when your doula comes to check in after your baby is born—usually within the first few days or weeks. It’s a calm, nurturing space to process your birth, support your healing, and help you feel cared for and confident as you adjust to life with your new baby.
Unlike a medical checkup, this visit is all about emotional support, practical help, and gentle guidance during those early, tender days of motherhood.
Postpartum Visits
-
A visit often includes:
Birth Debrief: A safe space to talk about your birth experience
Emotional Support: Validation, encouragement, and compassionate listening
Feeding Support: Help with breastfeeding/chestfeeding, bottle-feeding, or combo feeding
Newborn Care Tips: Diapering, soothing, sleep, baby-wearing, and more
Physical Recovery Support: Encouragement around healing, rest, and self-care
Partner & Family Check-In: Supporting the whole family unit
Resource Referrals: Local lactation consultants, pelvic floor therapists, counselors, etc., if needed
Gentle Help: Light tidying, meal reheating, or holding baby so you can shower or nap—just being that “extra set of hands”
-
Postpartum visits remind you that you matter too—not just the baby. Whether you’re navigating tears, cluster feeds, or just need someone to hold space, your doula is there to say: “You’re doing an amazing job. Let’s take care of you, too.”
-
You’re learning everything for the first time—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed
Emotional ups and downs are common—support can ease that rollercoaster
Having someone who knows the newborn stage can offer huge reassurance
Helps you feel seen, celebrated, and not alone
-
Every postpartum experience is different—even if it’s not your first
You might be balancing older children and need extra hands or emotional support
Past birth experiences may still need processing
You may want to do things differently this time—more rest, more support, a slower pace
Support helps ease the load (because even “experienced” moms shouldn’t have to do it all alone!)
